When this particular writer heard that Grace Jones was on the road again this summer, more than a few images passed through the mind, particularly a love scene with Roger Moore. This version of Warm Leatherette still sends chills down the spine, as the vision of Grace Jones speeding along an urban underpass with deadly, amorous intent in her eyes could be the stuff of nightmares. Or dreams, depending on your constitution. Certainly something to think about on a warm Friday afternoon.
Of course in this era of her career, with Wally Badarou on keys, the music is killer. Check Wally talking eloquently on Sly and Robbie, Grace Jones, and virtually any topic you care to mention, here.
Melbourne participant Fred Cherry featured on new DFA mix
Keys open doors: Fred Cherry gets his piano man on at the Melbourne Academy in 2006
Perth's very own heavy hitter Fred Cherry is featured on a new mix by DFA's J&J (aka Justin Miller and Jacques Renault), recorded for our friends at Fact Magazine. The man behind the world-renowned Cardboard City 7" label might not be an octopus, but that doesn't stop him from owning four drum kits, and pounding out raw garage rock with Bobby Blackbird and the Bluejays. He's also the driving force behind the Milton Chambers Experience, whose 'Journey To Planet Pluto' rocked asteroid belts across the cosmos with its trippy '70s organ solo and fat cinematic funk. On the J&J mix, he delivers percussion-heavy discoid dub psychedelia with Busride To The Zoo, released last year on his own Hole In The Sky label. Cherry picked breaks as fat as yo momma.
BONUS: Fred Cherry's set at this year's RBMA Sónar Lounge on The Fader.
Money on our minds: Veto Money aka Black Spade at the Academy in 2005
This Seattle participant doesn't make albums, but statements - about life, love, music, and true friends. His long player To Serve With Love, released earlier this year on OM Records, is a collection of tracks that threaten to break out of hip hop's vacpac cellophane and chart a bold, erratic course for the fullest effect. Throw in some Shuggie Otis styles with Cody ChesnuTT acoustics, and you have the snap shot of a future classic. STL was never gonna hold this guy for long - at this year's Sónar festival, he brought the album to the stage of the Red Bull Music Academy Lounge and made the crowd go daaamn in the midst of siesta time. Listen to the show's opening cut, Tale of 32, below or download the full recording here.
Another unique voice in the world of beats, Samiyam has recently been dropping perfectly-placed nuggets of lurching hip hop riddims like some veteran Risk mastermind.
As well as forthcoming EPs on Kode 9'sHyperdub label, and the Pasadena-based Poo-Bah record store and label, he's also been flipping surreal magazine images for the cover art of his Rap Beats vol. 1 collection (check out 'One Love' below), and reworking the new single 'Make It So' from everyone's favourite Victorian beat scientist Daedalus on Ninja Tune. Did someone say Samiyammas?
